Should you Double Cleanse?

Should you Double Cleanse?

I must confess that I'm a recent convert to double cleansing. I have always tried to keep my skincare routine as fast and efficient as possible as, like us all,  I just don't have the time for lengthy rituals, while also believing that massaging great cleansing products into my face at the end of the day was enough to leave my skin completely clean and ready for its nightly renewal. But, having recently tested the Double Cleanse System by hip Irish brand Pestle & Mortar, I have to admit that I was wrong! and I am hooked.

Beauty experts are adamant that cleansing is the most important step of every effective skincare routine. Makes complete sense too - you wouldn't lather luxurious body oil over sweaty grubby skin, would you? A complete waste of expensive product, time and money!

Our skin is dirtier than ever these days and a minute in the shower just doesn't cut it anymore. Double cleansing simply means cleansing twice with a complementary duo of products to dig deep and thoroughly clean the skin, removing all traces of the days grime and leaving the skin prepped for overnight repair and restoration. Apparently it's the holy grail of the beauty savvy Koreans. So much so that many Korean dermatologists will say that up to half of typical skin-care issues (e.g., acne, excess sebum production, etc.) could be eliminated with proper cleansing.

Traditionally, double cleansing starts with an oil-based cleanser to lift off all the surface stuff and remove even the most stubborn eye makeup. Pestle & Mortar's Erase is a lightweight balm that does just this, using a nourishing blend of Grape Seed Oil, pumpkin seed (think Vitamin E, Omega fatty acids) and prickly pear seed oil (one of my favs) for non-greasy cleansing without disrupting the skin’s natural balance.  Step two is Refresh, a lightweight gel formulated with Superoxide Dismutase, papaya and mango enzymes to dissolve deeper dirt and dead skin cells and leave skin clean, bright and glowing.

Another newbie is Double Cleanse, a compact, fragrance-free 2-in-1 solution created by one of my trusted skincare experts Caroline Hirons (a.k.a.everything you ever needed to know about skincare!) in collaboration with Pixi Beauty (of the famed Glow Tonic!). I haven't yet tried it but with the brains behind its creation, I'm sure it delivers too.. Pixi is widely available and at Marks & Spencer (approx €33/100ml).

Most of us don't really need to double cleanse every night (especially those that don't wear much make up), but as my skin ages and gets drier and drier, I really do notice the benefits and find my skin isn't quite bed ready until I do. Enough said, just let me know how you get on....
